Massive 4K TV expected in US release for Holidays

Sony has revealed its previously-rumored 84-inch 4K television. The company's first attempt at a 4K TV set, the XBR-84X900 with its 3840x2160 LCD panel display was shown off at a press conference at IFA 2012 earlier today. The screen release follows Sony's own 4K home cinema projector and follows similar big-screen releases by Samsung and LG in recent months.

The screen itself uses proprietary upscaling technology including the 4K X-Reality PRO picture engine, and is also capable of displaying footage in 3D at the higher-than-HD resolution. Digital cameras can also be connected to show pictures, or can use PlayStation 3 applications such as PlayMemories Studio to manage playback on the screen.

Sound is provided by two vertical speaker bars containing a 10-unit live speaker system for virtual 5.1 surround sound. They can also be detached and connected to an existing home theater system.

It can connect to the Internet using its built-in Wi-Fi connection, allowing it access to Sony Entertainment Network services including Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited, Netflix, Pandora, and more than 50 other online services. A Media Remote app can also be downloaded to tablets and smartphones.

Sony is keeping quiet about pricing for the 4K TV, but will be selling it through its own retail stores in the US later this year. Based on the LG and Samsung release prices, it may end up being sold for $15,000 to $20,000. [via Sony]
