LG Optimus L9 brings 4.7-inch display, language translation

updated 07:58 am EDT, Wed August 29, 2012

LG Optimus L9 rounds out L-series at the top end

LG has rolled out the latest in its L-series line of entry-level to mid-range Android handsets. The Optimus L9 is the 'flagship' model and sits above the L3, L5, and the L7. It distinguishes itself with a large 4.7-inch IPS display and a language translation app that uses OCR to translate text from 44 languages into 64 native languages.

As with the rest of the L-series, the phone maintains a premium appearance, but comes with middling processor specificiations to keep the devices affordable. The Optimus L9 picks up a dual-core 1GHz processor, but is matched with 1GB of RAM. It includes a 5-megapixel rear camera and a high-capacity 2,150mAh battery. As with most handsets currently shipping, it will arrive preinstalled with Android 4.0 'Ice Cream Sandwich.'

LG has also included a new customizable keyboard it calls the My Style Keypad. The keyboard can be quickly adjusted for use with one hand or two hands, splitting the keyboard. The feature has been available on tablets for some time, but makes sense being applied to a large screen smartphone particularly in portrait mode. The QMemoTM also gives users the ability to type notes, or capture them in handwriting using their fingertip.

Launch details and pricing for the LG Optimus L9 have yet to be announced.
