Samsung shows Ativ S with Windows Phone 8, Ativ Tab tablet

updated 03:13 pm EDT, Wed August 29, 2012

First phone to run Microsoft's latest mobile OS

Although Samsung primarily focused on its Android-based Galaxy Note II at IFA today in Germany, the company also took time to highlight the Windows Phone 8-equipped Ativ S and the Windows RT-powered Ativ Tab. The S variant is one of the first smartphones to run the latest version of Microsoft's mobile OS, which expands support for improved hardware such as a dual-core 1.5GHz processor.

Other features include a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display with 1280x720 resolution, an HSPA+ radio, an eight-megapixel primary camera with autofocus and LED flash, a 1.9-megapixel front-facing shooter, and NFC for mobile payments. Buyers can choose from 16GB or 32GB variants, though a microSD slot comes standard.

The Ativ Tab takes advantage of Microsoft's Windows RT platform, pairing a dual-core 1.5GHz processor with a 10.1-inch display. The midrange tablet features also include a five-megapixel rear camera, 1.9-megapixel front-facing sensor, and HDMI and USB connection options.

Samsung has yet to disclose pricing details or launch timing for the Ativ S or the Ativ Tab.
