More openings, re-openings coming this weekend
Apple will be offering one new store opening and one re-opening this weekend, with a store opening its doors for the first time in Cologne, Germany on Saturday September 1 and the Bellevue, Washington store hosting a grand re-opening party. In addition, construction is underway on a second Apple retail store for Hong Kong and a larger refurbishment for the store in New York's Walt Whitman mall. There's also information on stores in Montreal, Canada, and a change in Sweden.
The Rhine-Centre store in Cologne will be Apple's ninth store in Germany, and as usual will offer free commemorative t-shirts to the first 1,000 visitors. The store is expected to open on Saturday at 10 a.m. local time, and is located on the upper level.
On the same day as the Cologne opening, the Bellevue, WA store will mark its re-opening into a new, larger space on the second floor, reports Mac IT Help. Site owner Bruce Craig first noted the expansion plans in May of last year and has taken recent pictures (seen below) of the black-walled frontage, which replaces a smaller store on the lower level.
The new Bellevue store expansion and relocation in part may be a response to a large Microsoft retail store located three stores down from the current location. The new space is said to have formerly been home to three separate retailers and should offer some 9,200 square feet, more than double the old store's footage. ifoAppleStore says that the store will be above and easily visible to anyone visiting the Microsoft store.
Two other stores are also in the process of expanding. A temporary and (according to reports) non-standard Apple Store has opened in the Walt Whitman mall in Huntington Station, New York near the Macy's while construction on an expansion is underway. The temporary site is at the opposite end of the mall near Abercrombie & Fitch. The original store is taking over the two retail spaces on either side of it to create a wide-storefront with 10,350 square feet of space. Construction should be complete in time for the expanded store to open before the holiday shopping season, reports ifoAppleStore.
Similarly, the Montreal suburb of Laval store at Carrefour Laval will grow by 80 percent by taking over the retail space next door to the existing store, removing the wall separating the two stores and combining the space for a total of over 10,000 square feet. No opening date is yet known.
Montreal will also see an entirely new store in the suburb of Brossard in the Quartier DIX30 mall across the river from the city center. The mall is styled in an open, "Main Street" fashion and the new Apple store will be on Boulevard Leduc and sport a floor plan of some 8,400 square feet. There's no information on a possible opening date, as the mall only recently finished construction.
A new store is also underway in Hong Kong, that city's second such store. According to Engadget China, it will be located in the Kowloon Tong area on the second floor of the Festival Walk mall. The site speculates that it could be open as early as mid-September.
