App helps predict character actions
Mariner Software has announced Persona, an upcoming writing tool for Macs. Instead of creating scripts or novels, the software focuses solely on developing characters so that they have consistent, established personalities. 32 different archetypes are used; characters are further defined by traits, qualities, flaws, backgrounds, occupations, and their interaction with other personalities.
The app charts the relationships between characters, and can also create Smart Groups, which sort characters according to filters like gender, type, tag, or keyword. As needed, ad hoc groups can be assembled to judge interactions. Names can be custom-created or picked from a database of 16,000, which also includes origins and meanings.
A beta version of Persona is already available, but the finished release is only expected sometime in early September. OS X 10.7 or later is required. People who pre-order now will get the software for $40, 20 percent off the normal cost.
