Apple lists eight Samsung cellphones for US sales ban

updated 06:51 pm EDT, Mon August 27, 2012

Infringement proposal includes four versions of Galaxy S II

Following a decisive court victory last week, Apple has notified the court of Samsung products it wants banned from sale in the US, all of which are smartphones. As per instructions issued by Judge Lucy Koh after the jury was dismissed, Apple has created a list of eight targeted Samsung devices, two days before an August 29th deadline.

The named handsets include the Droid Charge, Galaxy Prevail, Galaxy S Showcase, Galaxy S 4G, three carrier-specific versions of the Galaxy S II, and the Galaxy S II Epic 4G. Although only eight of the 28 devices listed in the lawsuits have been listed for injunctions, there is still time for the Apple legal team to select additional targets.

For the most part the selected phones infringe on design-related patents, the Galaxy Prevail being the exception. The next task for Apple is to make a case to the court that the company is suffering irreparable harm from Samsung's products unless they are banned in the US.

Samsung is already enduring a preliminary injunction against the Galaxy Tab 10.1, which it is hoping to have lifted on the basis that the device is not infringing any of Apple's design patents. It is infringing on software-related patents, which could, however, be worked around via a software update.

Due to the court's busy schedule, it has blocked Samsung from getting more than 14 days to respond to filings. An injunction hearing is currently scheduled for September 20th. [via The Verge]
