Microsoft unveils company logo using new font, logo

Third corporate logo change in Microsoft history

Microsoft has updated its corporate logo for the third time in its history. After being introduced 25 years ago, the bold, italicized text with a cut into the central letter "O" has been replaced by a Metro-style "window" logo with a more up-to-date font choice, as part of its product rebranding efforts this year. Microsoft Brand Strategy Manager Jeffrey Meisner says the logo "should evolve to visually accentuate this new beginning."

The new font, Segoe, matches that used elsewhere by the firm, both in products and in marketing. The four-color wavy window has been replaced by four squares, which is claimed to "express the company's diverse portfolio of products," and appears to be heavily influenced by the new Metro interface. This marks the first time that the Microsoft word-based logo includes an image in the design.

Microsoft will be using the new logo on its stores and products from now on, in a rebranding process that will take months to complete. The most recent logo appeared in 1987, replacing the "bibbet" logo that was used by the company since 1982. [via Microsoft Blog]
