Qualcomm teaming with LG on quad-core S4 Pro smartphone

updated 08:23 am EDT, Thu August 23, 2012

LG to launch high-power superphone next month

Qualcomm has said it is teaming with LG to power a forthcoming handset from the Korean manufacturer which is set to debut in Korea next month. Following its home market launch, the device will be rolled out globally. The Snapdragon S4 Proquad-core APQ8064 chipset will be LTE-enabled and will be, by some margin, the most powerful mobile chip yet to hit the smartphone space in both processing and graphics performance partnered with its Adreno 320 GPU.

"Qualcomm will supply the latest Snapdragon S4 Pro platform to LG, enabling LG's new quad-core smartphone, which is currently in production with anticipated commercial availability in Korea in September and global rollout to follow," reads a statement from the chipmaker. "This smartphone will be the newest commercial and global device to offer a quad core CPU Snapdragon S4 processor along with 3G/LTE multi-mode capabilities, delivering a superior mobile experience for voice, web browsing, games, user interfaces and other graphics applications."

A new LG Nexus-branded smartphone was leaked yesterday as coming soon to Japan's NTT DoCoMo network. If LG is one of several manufacturers tipped to release a new Nexus-branded handset, it is likely to be a flagship handset for the company, and it would likely want to make its mark on the mobile landscape. The purported LG Optimus Nexus running Android 4.1 'Jelly Bean' matched with the Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core chip would be well on the way to achieving LG's aim to challenge Samsung for the Android smartphone crown.

LG is also known to be developing a handset known as the Optimus G that is known to be a high-end handset. Although the chipset powering the Optimus G has not been confirmed, it is known to incorporate 2GB of RAM, center on a 4.7-inch 720p IPS LCD and carry a 13-megapixel camera on the rear. Either way, the S4 Pro-powered handset will be a smartphone to be reckoned with. [via Anandtech]
