Bing brings Quora into social search results

updated 06:38 pm EDT, Wed August 22, 2012

Social questions now answered in Bing sidebar

Microsoft will be adding information from social questioning site Quora into the results for its Bing search engine. The new addition was announced today in a post from the Bing Team. The addition of Quora marks another step in Microsoft's continuing effort to grow market share for its search engine, which so remains in the shadow of market leader Google.

Beginning today, Bing users in the United States will see results from top Quora contributors appearing in the sidebar. Quora is a knowledge sharing site where contributors with first-hand knowledge contribute detailed answers on a range of topics. Users can hover over the name of a displayed contributor to find out more about them or click directly to answers they have shared.

Microsoft has already integrated content from foursquare, Twitter, and LinkedIn with its Bing search results. The Quora addition is a continuation of that effort to tie users' social web life into their Bing experience. Microsoft's search engine currently accounts for about 25.6 percent of all searches in the US, far behind Google's search service. To improve its standing, Microsoft has been redesigning the service and bringing on new personnel tasked with improving Bing's perception.
