T-Mobile unveils unlimited HSPA+ data plan for US customers

updated 01:31 am EDT, Wed August 22, 2012

Inexpensive plan replaces higher-end tiered access to '4G'

Wireless provider T-Mobile has announced an industry-first nationwide unlimited "4G" data plan for the United States. The new plan commences September 5, and can be added to an existing package for as low as $20. T-Mobile claims there are no caps or speed throttling with the new plan.

The Unlimited Nationwide 4G Data plan will cost $20 per month when added to a Value voice and text plan, or $30 per month when added to a Classic voice and text plan. A single line Value plan with unlimited talk, basic text messaging, and unlimited nationwide 4G data will cost $70 per month. The single line Classic plan with unlimited talk, unlimited text and unlimited nationwide 4G data will cost $90.

In order to compete with AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint, T-Mobile is in the process of upgrading its network to support the 1,900MHz band of HSPA+, a higher-speed version of 3G that some carriers have marketed as "4G." The move should allow T-Mobile to carry virtually any phone supported by rival GSM/HSPA+ provider AT&T, and more specifically, the iPhone. It's uncertain if Apple and T-Mobile are in negotiations at this stage, but the latter could start carrying the iPhone as soon as this fall, when the next model update is expected to ship. The carrier has promised to have the 1,900MHz band up and running by the end of 2012.
