Facebook outs new Messages feature with two-pane layout

updated 04:11 pm EDT, Wed August 22, 2012

Facebook Web Messenger gets two-pane interface that mimics the look of Timeline

Facebook on Wednesday detailed that it's changing its Messages feature with a new interface. Called Web Messenger, the two-pane layout will show the name of the person a user is conversing with on the left along with the expanded conversation on the right. Newly added in the thread is support for multiple photos and keyboard shortcuts for the first time.

To view the shortcuts, users are prompted to press Alt and Q on a PC or Control and Q on Mac. The new interface is more inline with the overall look of Facebook's main Timeline view as well.

There is a search function as well, letting users find people or keywords. Like in the old chat feature, viewed messages will be marked as seen.

The new interface is rolling out today, but not all users have received it yet.
