Next Nexus specs possibly leaked online

updated 03:37 pm EDT, Tue August 21, 2012

1.5GHz dual-core A9, Super AMOLED HD screen

Specifications for the next iteration of Google's Nexus line of smartphones may have leaked online today, showing that Samsung will again be manufacturing at least one version of the next generation of handsets to feature the "pure Android experience." SamMobile has been given a spec sheet that shows a previously unrevealed Nexus device sandwiched between the Galaxy S III and the Galaxy Nexus. Should the spec sheet prove accurate, the rumored device will see some upgrades over its predecessor, but no dramatic improvements, likely as a means of keeping costs down.

The leaked sheet claims the next Nexus phone will sport a 4.65-inch Super AMOLED HD screen, which would be an improvement over the Galaxy Nexus' Super AMOLED screen. The next device will also reportedly have a 1.5GHz dual-core A9 processor, faster than the 1.2GHz dual-core A9 in the Galaxy Nexus.

The next Nexus' camera -- one big negative mark against the first Galaxy Nexus -- will also see improvements. The new version is said to come with an 8MP rear camera and a 1.9MP front-facing camera, considerable improvements over the 5MP and 1.3 cameras found in the first model. The new phone will have the same 16GB of internal storage as the original, but in a shift, the next Nexus is said to support SD cards, allowing users to expand its memory.

The leaked spec sheet, should it prove accurate, would likely mean that the new Nexus could debut at a price point not too high above the current model. Should this be the case, it would be in keeping with Google's strategy for its Nexus 7 tablet: rolling out a capable device at a competitive price point. For that budget tablet, the pricing move appears to have paid off, and Google may be looking to repeat that success with the next version of its branded smartphone.

The sheet does, though, only show the specs for a Samsung-produced Nexus model. Google is rumored to be working with multiple manufacturers to roll out a wide line of Nexus devices, possibly simultaneously.
