Sony reveals Exmor RS camera sensor for smartphones

updated 09:44 am EDT, Mon August 20, 2012

Stacked sensor capable of HDR video recording

Sony has formally unveiled it stacked CMOS sensor for smartphones. Last seen in January, the Exmor RS camera modules boast a backside-illuminated CMOS sensor which stacks the pixel layer over the signal ship, shrinking the module's size. The two layers being independent of each other, combined with the pixel layer and analog logic chip not having to compete for space, promises improved image quality compared to previous methods.

The RS range consists of three different camera modules. A 13-megapixel version is joined by two eight-megapixel options, one with improved signal processing. The modules come complete with new f/2.2 lenses, reworked auto-focus and capable of HDR video recording.

The new modules are being aimed for an October release to handset manufacturers. Since the iPhone 4S uses Sony camera modules, it's possible that the same technology may appear in a future Apple release as well as its own line of smartphones. [via Engadget]
