Google Maps for Android gets public transit boost

updated 04:17 pm EDT, Wed August 15, 2012

Schedules for more than one million public transit stops

The Google Maps for Android app will receive an update giving it access to schedule information for more than one million public transit stops worldwide. The update was announced in a post on Googles Lat Long Blog. The update to version 6.10 is available in the Google Play Store for free, though compatibility may depend on device type.

The update brings public transit schedules for nearly 500 cities including New York, London, Tokyo, and Sydney. It also includes changes to the Transit Lines layer, allowing users to select between trains, buses, trams, and subways for display.

The app update also includes region highlighting, My Places, and Location History displays. Users searching for a city or postal code will now see the borders of that region highlighted. Enabling Location History will allow users to browse regularly visited places through the Location History dashboard.
