Sprint effectively drops iPhone 4S to $50

updated 05:57 pm EDT, Tue August 14, 2012

Price cut by way of American Express Reward Card

Sprint has again dropped the price of the iPhone 4S, effectively lopping $100 off the cost by offering a $100 American Express Reward Card along with the purchase of a 16GB model and a two-year activation. Just over a week ago, the nation's third-largest carrier cut the price of a 16GB model by $50 to $150. The addition of the Reward Card means the carrier is effectively selling the latest version of Apple's phone for $50, far below the other national carriers.

The carrier is likely discounting the iPhone 4S in anticipation of Apple announcing a new version in the coming weeks. The iPhone 4S is only about 10 months old, but expectations surrounding its successor have already been acknowledged to be affecting sales of the 4S.

Sprint may, in fact, be looking to clear as much of its remaining iPhone 4S inventory, as the future of the device is unclear. The next iPhone launch is expected to be accompanied by a new dock format for the entire iOS product lineup. [via 9to5Mac]
