Purported next-gen iPhone motherboard surfaces

Next iPhone motherboard possibly spotted

A purported next-gen iPhone motherboard has surfaced thanks to a WeiPhone forums user. The part appears to be from a prototype device, if it is indeed from the next iPhone, as it does not carry the usual labeling one would expect to see. Also unseen is the processor that Apple might use in the device, at this stage expected to be a lower power 32nm variant of the A5X utilized in the third-generation iPad.

The motherboard also appears to cater for a smaller SIM card, consistent with the utilization of nano SIM rumors. The battery connector shows five pins, instead of the four on the current iPhone 4S, again consistent with a higher capacity battery that is expected to ship with the new device. Most notably, however, the motherboard also sports additional antenna connections hinting at the possibility that the next-gen iPhone will indeed by the first to support 4G LTE networks as with the third-generation iPad. The digitizer connection has also been modified, likely to support the new 4-inch display.

Apple has yet to announce its launch even for the next-generation iPhone. The most recent rumors peg its launch for September 12, with the devices expected to ship from September 24. The launch of the next iPhone is expected to be one of the largest product launches ever. Last year's iPhone 4S launch was met with some disappointment as the device did not get a full redesign or larger display as had been rumored at the time. This has led to pent up demand for a completely redesigned iPhone, which is finally expected show as soon as next month. [via 9to5Mac]
