iHome ships iD55 portable iPhone/iPad stereo

updated 03:49 pm EDT, Wed August 8, 2012

Sliding cover guards dock, controls

iHome says it has launched the iD55, a portable stereo speaker for iOS devices. The unit can dock and charge iPhones, iPods, and iPads; it also supports sound-only connections for other devices via an aux-in jack. In either case, SRS TruBass processing is used to add clarity and bass to output.

Another distinguishing feature is a sliding cover, which guards both the dock and controls when the speaker isn't in use. In terms of power the speaker can operate either on an AC adapter or four AA batteries. An audio detection circuit, meanwhile, can wake the speaker on its own to play app sounds.

iHome is selling the iD55 for $80.
