Would contradict 19-pin rumors
The iOS 6 beta may hint that Apple's new dock connector format will actually use 9 pins, according to 9to5Mac. Part of the firmware's code records hardware features of iOS devices; one line specifically reads "000002d9c t_copyDeviceSupports9Pin." If future iOS devices are switching to a 9-pin format, however, it would contradict other reports pointing to an 8- or 19-pin design.
One or more Apple devices are expected to move to the new connector style this fall, primarily the iPhone. The technology should let Apple maximize use of the internal space in its products and make them even thinner. It could have a major impact on the accessory industry though, since Apple has relied on a 30-pin format since the early 2000s.
