Galaxy Note sequel confirmed for late August reveal

Samsung has confirmed that its Samsung Mobile Unpacked event just ahead of IFA on August 29 will be headlined by the launch of its Galaxy Note 5.3 sequel. "We plan to unveil the next Galaxy Berlin on August 29," a Samsung spokesman told Reuters. The revelation confirms rumors that surfaced in early July that Samsung was prepping a next-generation Galaxy Note following the success of the original.

The Galaxy Note 2 is expected to sport a larger 5.5-inch display, that is said to be much tougher than is usual. Although increasing the screen size from the 5.3-inch dimensions of the original, Samsung is expected to have kept its overall footprint at a similar size. The July rumor also indicated that it would launch with Android 4.1 'Jelly Bean,' though at least Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) is a certainty - the original was lumped with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), although it shipped around the same time as the Android 4.0 launch last year.

It is also thought that the Galaxy Note 2 will run Samsung's quad-core Exynos 4112 processor, which recently showed in benchmarks. Samsung is also expected to bump up the rear camera from 8-megapixels to around 12- or even 13-megapixels. Its trademark S Pen remains, as does a suite of specially tailored apps for the peripheral.
