Samsung begins mass production on 'ultra-fast' flash memory

eMMC Pro Class 1500 said capable up to 140MBps

Samsung announced today that it had begun volume production of its new eMMC Pro Class 1500 NAND storage products. The new storage components offer data access speeds greatly increased over those seen in current models. According to Samsung, the new models can process data at up to four times the speed of previous embedded flash chips.

The eMMC Pro Class 1500 line is capable of 1,500 IOPS (inputs/outputs per second) when writing data and 3,500 IOPS when reading data. Samsung manufactures the components using a 20nm process, and they are designed to excel at web-browsing, 3D and HD video capture and playback, and multi-tasking. The eMMC Pro Class 1500 line is the first to support the JEDEC e-MMC v4.5 specification, which brings security, efficiency, and reliability improvements allowing for -- among other features -- file sanitizing and power-off notification.

The new line of components will come in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB configurations. Samsung says the 64GB model will weigh in at only 0.6 g. As these are the sort of memory modules typically featured in smartphones and tablets, consumers likely can expect to see lighter and faster devices featuring the components appearing over the next few quarters.
