Acer, rest of market loses out

Several tablet makers grew worldwide tablet shipments year-over-year in the second quarter, even as Apple continued its dominance, according to new IDC numbers. As a whole the tablet market reached 25 million units, rising 66.2 percent over Q2 2011. Apple's 17.042 million iPads represented a growth of 84.3 percent, giving it a 68.2 percent marketshare, up from a previous 61.5 percent slice.

Samsung shipments nevertheless rose 117.6 percent to 2.391 million, putting the company in second place with a 9.6 percent share. Amazon ranked third with a 5 percent share and 1.252 million units, despite not having had a media tablet to speak of a year ago. ASUS' numbers increased 115.5 percent to about 855,000, or a 3.4 percent share.

Acer, however, suffered, dipping 38.7 percent to 385,000 units, or a meager 1.5 percent share. Remaining tablet makers collectively dropped 16.4 percent to 3.067 million units, a 12.3 percent share.
