RPG coming soon for Mac, PC, iPad 14 years after original release

Classic computer roleplaying game Baldur's Gate is in the process of being redone for the Mac, PC, and iPad in an enhanced edition. Following a multi-day countdown timer, publisher Beamdog and developer Overhaul Games revealed more information about the previously announced port Thursday -- revealing three new playable sidekicks, and a new dungeon not found in the 1998 original release.

The enhanced edition is including the original Baldur's Gate game and integrating the expansion Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast. Cross-platform multiplayer capability has been added, as well as higher-resolution graphics. The game also features iPad-specific user interface conventions, such as standard multitouch implementations to zoom in on the action, or to swipe through dialog trees.

Gameplay is based on the pen-and-paper Dungeons and Dragons second edition ruleset, with senior Dungeons and Dragons writer Dave Gross joining the team to provide additional content, linking missions together in a more coherent fashion. Many of the developers of the game from now-defunct Bioware are on-hand at Overhaul Games to exterminate residual bugs left over from the 14-year old game. The game boasts all the classes, races, and plot points featured in the original.

The game remake is scheduled for release on the PC and Mac on September 18 for $20, with the iPad version retailing for $10 and expected approximately the same time. All optional characters are available in the Mac and PC versions, with in-app purchases making them available for iPad players. An Android release is expected, but no release date has been announced. An enhanced version of the follow-on Baldur's Gate II is expected in 2013.

Finally a REAL party-based turn-based RPG for the iPad!!!!!! Now if only we could get the Might and Magic (not Heroes) series and the Ultima series, it would be even better!!!!
