DSLR, interchangeable lens cameras get X-Cap protection

updated 02:22 pm EDT, Wed July 25, 2012

X-Cap will automatically protect lenses on DSLR, interchangeable lens cameras

A new invention dubbed X-Cap aims to protect the lenses of DSLR and other interchangeable lens cameras. Working just like the built-in lens caps in point-and-shoot cameras, the X-Cap mounts onto the lenses and automatically shuts to protect them. The inventor, Mr. Tsang, is based in Taiwan and hopes to create his own company Freestyle Model Work along with a Freemod brand.

The lens cap is made up of ABS plastic and used 13 separate components originally, before being reduced to 9 for the latest version, Engadget Chinese found. It installs onto standard ring thread locks that are also used to attach filters and the original lens cap.

The company so far has X-Caps for the Panasonic Lumix GF3 and GX1 micro four thirds cameras with Panasonic's 14-42mm zoom lens attached. The shutters appear to be mechanically powered, when the cameras' lens retracts. The inventor has applied for a patent application for the design in Taiwan.
