ChangeWave: pent-up demand for 'iPhone 5' driving market

updated 02:23 am EDT, Wed July 25, 2012

Galaxy S III demand high, and climbing

A June survey from ChangeWave Research sees major momentum for the Samsung Galaxy S III, but also shows "unprecedented" pent-up demand for the next model of iPhone. The survey looked at current demand for the Galaxy S III versus advance demand for an Apple "iPhone 5" among 4,042 consumers, mostly living in the US.

The percentage of respondents planning on buying a smartphone over the next 90 days looking at Samsung phone has climbed to 19 percent from 13 percent from March, and a four-fold increase since December 2011.

Consumers were presented with a description of probable iPhone 5 features -- such as a larger screen, improved camera, and 4G/LTE capability -- and asked how likely they were to buy one when it became available. At 14 percent of consumers saying they were very likely to buy, and 17 percent somewhat likely to buy, the demand for the next-generation iPhone is "strikingly higher" than for any previous iPhone model, according to ChangeWave analysts. A similar question was asked following the iPhone 4S announcement, with only 10 percent of respondents saying that they were very likely to buy, and 11.5 percent saying they were somewhat likely to buy.

In the same survey, demand for Motorola has fallen from six percent to four percent, HTC remains unchanged at three percent, and RIM remains stuck at an all-time low of two percent. Nokia has climbed to two percent from one percent on the strength of the Windows Phone platform.

Ok macnn, how does 14% 'Very Likely to buy' The iPhone 5 turn into "Unprecedented" "Pent" "Up" "Demand"?? Or are you counting the 17% 'Somewhat likely' and 9% 'Don't know" as purchases? That would still make it 40%. Ooooh, that sure is "UNPRECEDENTED!"
