Huawei unveils MediaPad 7 Lite

updated 12:39 pm EDT, Wed July 25, 2012

7-inch tablet to run Android 4.1

Huawei's company site today unveiled a new entry in the 7-inch tablet sector, the MediaPad 7 Lite. The new tablet, in combination with the recently revealed MediaPad 10, will allow the Chinese manufacturer to compete against both Apple's iPad and Google's Nexus 7 tablets. With regard to the latter at least, Huawei's entry will have a clear edge in some of its feature set.

The MediaPad 7 Lite's 7-inch chassis is a unibody design formed from an aluminum alloy. It will feature an IPS screen, allowing for wider viewing angles, and is capable of 1080p output. Inside, the device will pack 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi connectivity and -- unlike Google's popular tablet -- 3G cellular capability for voice, SMS, and MMS.

Images of the device also show both front-facing and rear-facing cameras, though Huawei provides no details on their resolution. GMSArena claims the device will have an SD card slot supporting up to 32GB, but Huawei's site neither confirms nor denies this.

As for the devices processing internals, Huawei provides no details. The MediaPad 7 Lite is said to be running the newest version of Android, and it could be doing so on one of Huawei's proprietary processors like the one seen in the MediaPad 10. Huawei boasts that the 1.5GHz K3 quad-core processor featured in that device is the smallest in the industry. The MediaPad 10 also features a 16-core GPU and 2GB RAM, and it seems likely that the new 7-inch tablet will run on components comparable for its size.

As with the device's specifications, Huawei has given no indication of pricing, availability, or a release date for the new 7-inch MediaPad. Indeed, the product page for the device doesn't even feature a way for consumers to pre-order it or to sign up for updates on the tablet. [via Unwired View]
