Scalado staff to form new imaging excellence centre for Nokia

Nokia has acquired Scalado, the Swedish app developer specializing in image editing and management. The deal, terms of which remain undisclosed, sees Nokia taking ownership of Scalado's technologies, intellectual property and staff. The 50-strong development team will be placed into Nokia's imaging department via a new "centre for imaging excellence" in Lund, Sweden.

Under Nokia's direction, the Scalado team will provide the handset manufacturer a "great opportunity to create even better imaging products and applications," according to the executive vice president of Smart Devices at Nokia, Jo Harlow. Sami Niemi, co-founder of Scalado, will become the new head of Capture & Relive within the Smart Devices department.

Scalado previously demonstrated its Remove photo editing tool in February, ahead of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The app would allow the user to highlight and remove unwanted objects from an image on their smartphone, before or after the photo is taken. Pricing or platforms for release were not discussed at the time, but a related image showed it being used on an HTC handset. [via Nokia Conversations]
