Motorola Xoom confirmed to get Android 4.1

updated 06:17 pm EDT, Tue July 24, 2012

Date for update still uncertain

Some US owners of the Motorola Xoom tablet will indeed receive an upgrade to the newest version of Android some time in the future. Android Police has leaked screens showing that Motorola was preparing to begin private testing of the software on its tablet, though those tests appear to have been delayed. There is, as yet, no date certain on when the testing will resume or when Android 4.1 will roll out for the device.

According to leaked images of the testing forum, the update will, at least initially, roll out only to Wi-Fi-only versions of the Xoom. Xoom owners on Verizon -- who recently received an upgrade to Android 4.0 -- will be left out, it would seem, though they may see the upgrade at a later date. This delay is likely due to Verizon needing to ensure that the software works properly with its network radios.

The update, when it rolls out, will make the Xoom the third device outside of the Nexus 7 to run the newest iteration of Android. Samsung's Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S smartphones have already received the update, and numerous other devices are expected to receive it over the next few months.
