New iPhone in production at Pegatron, sources allege

updated 10:50 am EDT, Mon July 23, 2012

Supplier also tapped as making 'new version of iPad'

Pegatron has started production of the next-generation iPhone at its Shanghai plant, according to industry sources in Taiwan quoted by DigiTimes. Apple has been rumored as going into production this month, but the new claim is the first to explicitly state that work is underway. It does contradict another report which says that the next iPhone is only in late testing phases.

Apple is generally expected to ship a new iPhone in October, or possibly as early as September. That leaves just a few months for the company to start full-scale production, and it will need at least a month to produce enough units to meet demand. Even then the product will likely quickly vanish from stock, leaving long delays for online orders and shortages at retail.

Sources also say that Pegatron has become the second OEM for "a new version of iPad," according to DigiTimes. Q3 shipments are expected to hit "a few million" units. Which iPad the sources might be referring to is unclear, but they could mean the anticipated "mini" model.
