Sources support adapter for iPhone 5 dock connector

updated 03:16 pm EDT, Mon July 23, 2012

Should allow older iPhone accessories to remain useful

Apple is indeed working on a dock adapter for the next-generation iPhone, say sources reached by iMore. The sources are the same that told the site about Apple's switch to a new connector format in February. At this point, the sources haven't said whether an adapter will be included in the box for the new phone, or if people will have to buy one separately. The site is sticking to an expected October timeframe for the upgraded iPhone's launch.

The report follows one from Reuters reinforcing views that Apple will move from its traditional 30-pin iOS connector to a smaller 19-pin format. For Apple the change should allow it to shrink all future iOS devices and/or put more hardware inside them, as well as sell more accessories. The shift should also benefit third-party accessory makers, who will be able to sell people on redesigned cases, speakers, and other gear. The public may have the most to lose, at least initially, since even with an adapter they may have to repurchase some products.

Sources? What sources? The same kind of sources that last year were saying that we would see a teardrop design?

iPhone "clones" from china often have the headphone jack on the bottom and a smaller "dock" connector which is basically just USB or USB+composite video+stereo out. This has to be a part from a clone device because Apple would never have lopsided speaker/microphone grills or shrink the dock connector just to move the phono jack to the bottom.

Mark my words, this is not an Apple iPhone 5 part.

There probably is a taller iPhone 5 coming out but this is not a part from it.
