First look: Google-Asus Nexus 7

updated 03:03 pm EDT, Fri July 20, 2012

We unpack Google's new tablet

Google's Nexus 7 tablet has sparked considerable interest since its unveiling late last month, and that interest appears to have turned into respectable initial sales. Over the past week, early pre-order units have been arriving in customers' hands, and ours just arrived recently. So Electronista's going to give you a first look at the Nexus 7 packaging, and of course the device that comes inside.

The Nexus 7 is a pretty simple affair, which is reflected in its packaging. The colorful outer sleeve slips off, revealing a plain black box that -- contrary to what some videos would have you believe -- opens very easily. Upon opening the inner box, the owner comes face to face with the 7-inch slate. Underneath is another box containing the power adapter -- which has a cord that doubles as a USB connection -- as well as the warranty and instruction guide.

And that's about it. We'll be back in a few days with a special review for the Nexus 7 once we've had a bit of time with the device. The tablet comes in 8GB and 16GB models. They can be pre-ordered at Best Buy, Staples, and GameStop, but those retail outlets are now out of stock, with new units slated to arrive in August. Customers can also order online at Google's Play Store; the 8GB model ships in 1-2 weeks, while the 16GB model is currently listed as out of stock.
