HTC confirms Jelly Bean updates inbound for HTC One X, S

updated 07:02 am EDT, Fri July 20, 2012

HTC one of the first to commit to Android 4.1 updates

HTC is now confirmed as the first major OEM to commit to upgrading at least some of its handsets to Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). Although it hasn't released a firm timetable for its updates, it will be bringing the latest version of Android to its One X, One XL and One S devices. Although Ice Cream Sandwich is also installed on the One V, it did not single that device out by name in its official statement on the matter.

"We know HTC fans are excited to get their hands on Google's latest version of Android," reads the statement from the company. "At this point in time, we can confirm that we have plans to upgrade our HTC One X, HTC One XL and HTC One S to Jelly Bean. Please stay tuned for more updates regarding device upgrades, timing and other details about HTC and Jelly Bean."

Although a number of manufacturers, are still working to bring Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) to devices that can support the OS, none of the other major Android makers have yet publicly committed to bringing Jelly Bean to their devices. With over 60 percent of Android devices still on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), HTC One series customers can appear to count themselves lucky that they have received early news of an update for their relatively new devices.

While the upgrade from Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich was considered to be the most comprehensive update to the Android OS to date, Jelly Bean is considered the equivalent of a service pack. Although it brings a few new features including Google Now, most of its enhancements are under the hood and improve the overall speed and fluidity of the UI.
