Google buys out email client maker Sparrow

Developer to be merged into Gmail team

In a surprise move, software developer Sparrow has announced that it has been bought out by Google. Most terms of the deal haven't been announced, but Sparrow does say it will be folded into the Gmail team to "accomplish a bigger vision" which it can allegedly "better achieve with Google." It also promises that it will "continue to make Sparrow available and provide support for our users."

Sparrow is responsible for producing a pair of popular email clients for the Mac and iPhone. The fate of a promised iPad app may be in doubt; in an email to customers, the company explains that "as we’ll be busy with new projects at Google, we do not plan to release new features for the Sparrow apps." At the same time, it was already at work on the iPad code, which could mean one last major iOS update to get iPad support out the door.
