Viacom ends ban on Daily Show, Colbert Report online streams

Company still in conflict with DirecTV

Viacom has finally returned The Daily Show and Colbert Report content to the web for online streaming. Both shows had been pulled from the company's various websites as part of an ongoing dispute with satellite television provider DirecTV, as both companies continue to disagree over contract terms in a battle that has made its way into the public view.

In The Daily Show episode that aired on Monday night, host Jon Stewart joked about the situation and took a dig at the show's own network for pulling the shows from online portals.

"The Daily Show and The Colbert Report were on hiatus, so no recent programs were available," Viacom spokesman Carl Folta told All Things D in a statement. "We know their fans have missed them -- and sadly subscribers of DirecTV who have not yet switched distributors are still forced to be without all the Viacom networks they love -- so we wanted to get them back on our sites as soon as we could."

Viacom is said to be demanding a higher payout from DirecTV for channels available to satellite companies. DirecTV subsequently directed its customers to watch the disputed shows online, however Viacom responded by pulling a wide range of show episodes off its websites.

Conflicts over contract terms involving studios and cable or satellite providers are not rare, though the negotiations are typically kept quiet.
