iOS 6 b3 adds Shared Photo Streams, VIP mail to iPhone 3GS

updated 12:39 pm EDT, Tue July 17, 2012

All new iCloud accounts getting only icloud.com addresses

Another important change in iOS 6 beta 3 is the addition of shared Photo Streams and VIP Mail filters to the iPhone 3GS, notes MacRumors. The features have been discovered by 3GS owners using the beta, and quietly confirmed by Apple via its website. The company has removed warnings on the iOS 6 preview page that previously said the features would require at least an iPhone 4 or an iPad 2.

The iPhone 3GS is the bare minimum for iOS 6, which should arrive this fall. Many new software features won't work on the phone though, such as turn-by-turn navigation and offline Reading Lists. Even some iOS 5 features are already unavailable, such as Siri. If it follows in the steps of the iPhone 3G, the 3GS could be made obsolete once a next-generation iPhone ships later this year.

Apple has also clarified to developers that people signing up for new iCloud email accounts will just get an icloud.com address; only people who already have a me.com address will get both extensions as an option. "Users signing up for new Apple IDs, or enabling Mail on their iCloud account for the first time, will automatically receive an @icloud.com email address instead of a me.com email address," the company states. "iCloud users with @me.com addresses that have been used with iOS 6 beta 3 will receive an @icloud.com email address that matches their @me.com address."
