Microsoft planning to ditch full retail Windows 8 version?

updated 11:49 am EDT, Fri July 13, 2012

System Builder edition would lack support from full version

Reports suggest Microsoft may be planning to offer only upgrade and "System Builder" options for Windows 8. Paul Thurrott and Mary Jo Foley of Windows Weekly revealed the alleged plans, which would see Microsoft decline to release a Windows 8 full boxed edition and instead rely on the OEM-edition sales and upgrades from previous versions.

Users who want to buy a full copy of Windows would be limited to the System Builder OEM edition, rather than a full boxed version, with 90 days of assistance via e-mail and telephone. The change could make things somewhat simpler for customers, who already have to choose between versions for home and business.

Microsoft early last week announced details of its Windows 8 upgrade offer. Transitioning from XP, Vista or 7 will cost $40, with a $15 option for a backup DVD by mail, with the packaged retail DVD version selling for $70 during the promotional period. [via Insideris]

Therefore, I have removed the content of the original post by hand.

I am asking for this post to be deleted, since I don't seem to have the option to do that myself.
