Monday reveal may show iPad version

Microsoft may be set to reveal the newest version of its Office productivity software on Monday, industry sources tell USA Today. The Redmond company is said to be planning a press conference for next week that will show off Office 15, which will feature an array of new features and will likely debut sometime after this fall's Windows 8 launch.

In the productivity sector Microsoft faces increasing competition from Google, whose Google Docs suite is continually adding features with the goal of bringing it to par with Office's capabilities. To head off Google, Microsoft is said to be working in even more capabilities, such as web extensions allowing websites to interact with documents. The company may also enable editing of Adobe PDF documents.

Microsoft is also thought to have significantly redesigned the look of its Office suite, bringing it more in line with the Metro interface seen on Windows 8. As Windows 8 is a touch-friendly operating system, gestures and touch capability are thought to be built into the newest version of Office.

There have been rumors that Microsoft was prepping versions of Office capable of running on iOS and Android tablets, but that remains uncertain. The Office suite is Microsoft's largest revenue generator, pulling in $22.2 billion for the company in 2011, and making it available on other platforms might grow receipts for the division. Such a move, however, might serve to lessen the incentive for customers to purchase a tablet running Windows 8, which could weaken the company overall.
