updated 03:59 pm EDT, Tue July 10, 2012

Scratch-resistant watch includes smartphone connectivity

Garmin is introducing another product in its watch-based GPS line. The Fenix Outdoor Watch, aimed at outdoor enthusiasts such as mountaineers and hikers, packs an assortment of instruments including optimized altimeter, barometer, and compass sensors alongside the satellite navigation system.

Waypoints can be marked along a track or route, with guidance provided by an on-screen navigation arrow, and the TracBack function can bring users back to a designated base camp by tracing the route already taken. ANT+ capability and Bluetooth is included for sharing tracks and routes with other compatible devices, and to view tracklogs on a more detailed map through the BaseCamp mobile app. It can also be connected to an external thermometer, heart rate monitor and a speed and cadence sensor to help bolster its existing real-time performance monitoring, including monitoring specific performance data and lap functionality.

The Garmin Fenix is expected to be out in the fall for around $400, with the optional thermometer expected to cost $30.
