Corel announces Painter 12 update, iPad control option

updated 09:00 pm EDT, Tue July 10, 2012

Painter 12 gets flow maps, vertical docking, Wacom multitouch

Corel today announced two additions to the functionality of its Painter 12 desktop program. The graphic design program received a free update adding new user interface options and support for artist tablets. The company also released an app for the iPad that allows the tablet to be used as a second input device.

The new update for Painter 12 adds flow maps, which give users more control over how paint collects and dries within the peaks and valleys of the canvas. The update also adds an option to dock palettes to the vertical edge of the application window by dragging and dropping. Additionally, users can now take advantage of multitouch support with Wacom Intuos5 touch pen tablets and Cintiq 24HD touch interactive pen displays. Users can use multitouch input to pan, spin, and pinch the canvas to focus on important areas.

The iPad companion app, Cinco, connects to a user's desktop using Wi-Fi and presents users with multiple inputs on the iPad screen, each of which controls a separate aspect of the Painter 12 interface. The app is adjustable to users' left or right hands, and the interface can also be adjusted to the most comfortable hand and finger placement. Cinco works alongside pen tablets and includes the option to customize the functions of each finger input.

Corel Cinco is available as a free iPad app (English only at present) for a limited time in the App Store. Corel Painter 12 is available for download on a trial basis from Corel's online store and can be purchased for $359. The update to Painter 12.2 is free for users that already own the program.
