Photos show alleged engineering sample of iPhone 5

Aspects resemble earlier leaked parts

New photos have emerged depicting an alleged engineering sample of the next-generation iPhone. The object is an all-metal block said to be "straight from a factory in China," and snapped by a "trusted source inside the Apple supply chain." It nevertheless has cues showing where certain design elements should be, such as the earpiece, Home button, and the camera and flash ports.

The new iPhone is expected to be taller than its predecessor, measuring 120mm versus 115.2mm. Photos also show a different back, with new lines cut near the top and the bottom. Between the camera and flash ports is what could be a hole for a previously-rumored rear-facing microphone; this might not only improve audio quality during video recording, but allow better noise reduction during calls.

The sample is consistent with part photos that began emerging in May. In these, the cuts on the back appear to be for the sake of a metal back with plastic trim at the top and bottom. There is no hint one way or another, however, of an anticipated smaller dock connector.
