Report: Samsung Windows RT tablet set for October

Samsung undeterred by Surface

Samsung may be preparing to release a tablet running Microsoft's Windows RT. Sources familiar with the matter tell Reuters that the device will debut this October alongside the new operating system. The decision to release an ARM-powered device runs counter to indications that Microsoft's manufacturing partners were shying away from RT in the wake of Microsoft announcing its own Surface tablets.

Samsung's Windows RT tablet is said to feature a Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm. The new tablet would represent a continuation of Samsung's efforts to improve its standing in the tablet sector by offering devices across a range of operating systems. The company's Galaxy line of tablets currently run on Google's Android operating system.

Previously, doubts persisted as to whether or not Samsung would release an ARM-based Windows tablet or stick with Intel's x86 architecture. Compounding those doubts were reports that Windows RT was difficult to optimize for tablets, and Microsoft's unveiling of its Surface tablets was thought by some to further discourage the software giant's relationship with manufacturers. Samsung's tablet would not be the only non-Microsoft device running Windows RT, though: Asus is also preparing ARM-powered devices to debut with Windows RT in the fall.
