Nintendo to highly tether online capabilities for first time

Nintendo customers owning both a a 3DS and the company's forthcoming Wii U console will be able to take advantage of a unified eShop account system. Fan site Nintendo World Report discovered the new policy in an email from a Nintendo service representative to a customer. The news sheds more light on the developing online component that will underly Nintendo hardware for this generation.

The new system will launch along with the Wii U, though the Nintendo rep pointed out that compatibility with the 3DS will be taken live some time after. The unified account system may allow users to purchase content through the Nintendo eStore on one device and have it delivered to the other device.

The system will launch initially in the United States and Canada, and Nintendo has not revealed how it will work in other countries. The service will also have a procedure for transferring user data and account permissions from a lost, stolen, or broken device to another. Nintendo gave no information on whether the unified accounts also mean that the other online features that have been previously shown off for the Wii U will see implementation in some form on the 3DS.
