Nokia exec: Lumias get PureView 'very soon'

updated 11:42 pm EDT, Sun July 8, 2012

Nokia phones also bound for Verizon

The imaging technology powering Nokia's 808 PureView will soon be making its way into the company's Lumia line of Windows handsets. This according to Nokia Vice President of Worldwide Developer Relations Richard Kerris. Kerris spoke recently with Neowin, revealing that the company is working to bring novel technologies to its handsets and to expand the number of carriers supporting Nokia smartphones.

Asked whether consumers could expect to see PureView appearing in Nokia's Lumia line, Kerris responded that the technology was due to land on the Lumia "very soon." PureView is the imaging technology that makes possible the high-quality pictures and videos produced by the 808. Nokia has yet to unveil any handsets with PureView, but it is possible that the company is keeping such devices under wraps until revealing them later this year in a Windows Phone 8 campaign.

Kerris also said that owners of Windows Phone 7 handsets -- which will not be eligible for upgrade to Windows Phone 8 -- will not be left hanging by the phone maker. Nokia is engaging with developers to ensure support for Windows Phone 7 devices, and the company is confident that carriers will put together packages to entice customers to upgrade to Windows Phone 8-capable devices.

On the carrier front, Kerris said that Verizon customers can expect to see Nokia phones available on their service before too long. Kerris also said that Nokia is working to integrate novel technologies into future handsets. The company is currently looking to turn concepts like flexible screens and wrap-around displays into marketable devices.
