BlackBerry App World passes 3 billion downloads

updated 03:26 pm EDT, Sat July 7, 2012

Two to three billion in less than a third the time it took for one billion

Struggling BlackBerry maker Research In Motion announced that its BlackBerry App World service has passed the three billion app download mark. A post on the Inside BlackBerry developer blog noted that downloads on the service are accelerating, and the App World reached its three billionth download in less than a third of the time that it took to reach the one billion mark. RIM's App World still lags far behind its competitors on other platforms.

The BlackBerry App World took 786 days to reach one billion downloads, 210 days to reach the two billion mark, and 176 days to reach the three billion mark. That figure does not include apps downloaded from third party BlackBerry app stores, apps pushed internally at companies, or apps downloaded directly from the web. BlackBerry App World now has more than 90,000 apps for download, many of which are originally written for Android.

RIM has long maintained that its App Store was a healthy ecosystem, arguing that it should be more attractive to developers due to its being more profitable than Android. Still, the Android platform has already hit 10 billion apps downloaded, and Apple remains in the lead with more than 25 billion apps downloaded.
