UK Nexus 7 to have little content at launch

updated 07:30 pm EDT, Thu July 5, 2012

No music, magazines, TV shows due to rights

When Google's Nexus 7 tablet launches later this year in the United Kingdom, it will apparently have to do so without anything in the way of music, magazine, or television content. The Guardian has found out that the search giant hasn't secured the distribution rights necessary to sell content in the UK through its Google Play Store. That means that Nexus 7 buyers will have to wait a while before watching or listening to content on their new tablets.

The Nexus 7 will go on sale in the UK on July 19 for 169. Google hasn't been able to sign content licensing agreements with major UK firms, though, so users may have access to movies, apps, and perhaps books, but not television, music, or magazines.

Users may still be able to transfer their own content to the Nexus 7 using Google's Drive cloud storage solution or any number of other services. Google is reportedly working to expand the movie and television categories for other countries, but this often requires lengthy negotiations with rights holders and licensing agencies.
