Galaxy Nexus returns next week sporting Android 4.1

updated 03:48 pm EDT, Thu July 5, 2012

Google updating software to address patent concerns

The recently-enjoined Galaxy Nexus will be returning to Google's Play Store next week. As ABC News reports, Google is working on a software update that will see features removed from the Android handset, thus negating some aspects of Apple's infringement claims, which were the cause of the injunction. When the Galaxy Nexus reemerges, it will be running the latest version of Google's Android operating system.

The feature in question is the "Quick Search Box" featured on the Galaxy Nexus, which Apple holds duplicates the features of its own patented "universal interface for retrieval of information in a computer system." The software modification Google is working on will keep the search box, but it will disable users' ability to search the phone itself, leaving them only with web search capabilities.

Google and Samsung have been working on a fix since the initial injunction order, and Samsung maintains that it will continue to pursue an appeal of the preliminary injunction. It is unknown whether the functionality alterations present in Android 4.1 -- the operating system the Galaxy Nexus will be running when it reappears -- will address solely the search component complaint or whether Google will take the opportunity to address other Apple complaints in one fix.

    What so special about the search deal?

    I've been doing it with everything from 1990's Palm
    and 2000's Windows Mobilde phones;

    even my beautiful Newton Messagepad had it
