Sony Music Unlimited service launches in Japan

updated 02:39 pm EDT, Tue July 3, 2012

Japan receives Sony service 19 months after initial launch

Sony Entertainment Network has launched its Music Unlimited service in Japan. Users will be able to access over 10 million songs from the catalogs of Sony Music, EMI, Universal, Warner Music, and other independent labels through the all-you-can-eat music streaming service.

The service provides access to a number of preset music channels organized by era, genre and other criteria, as well as My 2/4 Channels which are customized by favorite songs and artists. Individual songs and albums can be searched for, and, by scanning existing music files stored on computers, already-purchased music and playlists automatically appear in the Music Unlimited library for use on other devices.

The cross-platform service works on Android smartphones and tablets, the Playstation 3, the Playstation Vita, Windows PCs, Macs, and iOS. Select network-enabled Bravia HDTVs built from 2010 forward, Sony Blu-ray players, and multichannel integrated amplifiers are scheduled to gain access to the service after mid-July.

Music Unlimited is already being used in 16 other countries. Debuting in the UK and Ireland in December 2010, it then spread to other European markets and North America. Users in Japan will be charged a monthly subscription of 1480 yen ($18) for the service.
