Nexus 7 teardown reveals two speakers, straightforward build

iFixIt gives Nexus 7 a 7 out of 10

The recently introduced Nexus 7 tablet has now received the seemingly compulsory teardown from the iFixIt crew. The ASUS-built hardware claimed to be Google's own received a "repairability" score of 7 out of 10, which is good, but behind competitor Kindle Fire and its 8 out of 10 score. The surprising discovery was that, unlike Google's specs, the 7-inch tablet houses two speakers rather than one.

The crew found that opening the device is simple when using its plastic opening tool to unlock the plastic retaining clips. The large, 4,326mAh battery is the largest internal component and is found to last nine hours and 49 minutes. It was also easy to remove, with only a small amount of glue holding it in place. There are two copper alloy heatsinks inside to help prevent the tablet from getting too hot in users' hands. The first is between the battery and the body while the second one is under the LCD.

The fact the LCD is fused to the Corning Glass covering it makes replacement an expensive proposition. iFixit wasn't able to deduce exactly which model of Corning's Gorilla Glass is used.

The tablet can be taken apart with fairly simple tools, requiring only the plastic opening tool, a spudger, and a Phillips #00 screwdriver. Many of the components can be replaced without having to buy a new mainboard as well.

What, The battery is not soldered & glued in!

    this of course means:
    very bulky design,
    mosquito class battery life,
    fire hazard,
    prone to user replacement...
