Android 4.x OS running on 11 percent of Android devices

updated 06:10 am EDT, Tue July 3, 2012

Gingerbread continues to be the dominant Android installation

Android 4.0 is now running on just over a tenth of all Android-based smartphones, some eight and a half months since it was originally released. Statistics on the Android Developer website for devices accessing Google Play in a two-week period show Ice Cream Sandwich running on 10.9 percent of the Android ecosystem as of July 2. The recent release of the latest Android "hero" phones -- including the Samsung Galaxy S III and HTC One X, along with updates to older devices that are starting to roll out -- are thought to be behind the boost.

The data seems to show that 64 percent of the Android devices run Gingerbread in some form, the vast majority of which use version 2.3.3. Android 4.0 appears to have had a higher and more consistent rate of adoption from mid-March, most likely from device manufacturers opting to use the newer version of the operating system.

Although the data does not take into account handsets that do not connect to Google Play, it does suggest that unless manufacturers take to the newly-released Android 4.1, it will take a considerable amount of time before a significant number of users are using Jelly Bean-enabled devices.
