TomTom serves up Map Share service free to all devices

TomTom opening crowd-sourced map data to all users

TomTom is making its Map Share service available to users of all its devices for free. Users can choose to update their device on a daily basis for the latest map information served up by fellow TomTom users. As the video below shows, updates available include crowd-sourced information on speed zone changes, different street names or blocked roads.

Users can also now make their own manual adjustments to maps on the fly, choosing to either share those updates or simply store them locally. Users will also have the opportunity to receive updates from other TomTom users, choosing whether they receive some or all of the available information.

TomTom says that it also offers validated updates every three months, but will also offer user submitted updates more frequently if they have also been validated. With 60 million TomTom users around the world taking part in the Map Share community, the use of the additional probe data will help ensure that TomTom users have the most accurate maps available to them.
