Apple TV reaches Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam

updated 12:35 pm EDT, Wed June 27, 2012

Set-top shows in fraction of new Asian iTunes regions

In tandem with an expansion of the iTunes Store, Apple is now selling the Apple TV in at least four more regions, checks show. These include Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam. Three of the new iTunes regions -- Taiwan, Thailand, and the Philippines -- don't have the set-top listed on their local Apple online stores.

Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Macau, and Sri Lanka could potentially be carrying the device, but the countries don't have Apple online stores, making it difficult to check on their status since any sales would be handled strictly by local resellers. Without them Apple is only launching the Apple TV in just a third of the regions in which iTunes video is newly available. iTunes content is effectively required before an Apple TV can go on sale somewhere, since the device can otherwise only stream media from a handful of online services as well as local computers or iOS handhelds.
